Madrid (CNA).- The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker is against "divisions" in Europe. "We won't accept divisions in Europe anymore. We already suffered a lot during the Second World War, after the war and during the Cold War" he stated this morning in Madrid just before attending the European People's Party meeting that will be held in the Spanish capital and that is set to pass a declaration in defence of the unity of the EU's Member States. The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker emphasised that Europe "has already suffered a lot during the Second World War, after the War and during the Cold War" due to "divisions". Europe is a place "for dialogue and cohesion" and must pursue "the debate rather than the confrontation", he stated. Juncker assured that the core of Europe are not the nations, which he admitted "need to be respected and unified from within" but "the cohesion of the EU". "There is not a Southern Europe, a Northern Europe, an Eastern Europe, and a Western Europe but a solid Europe, unified in its diversity".

Juncker made these statements during a ceremony in which Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy awarded him the "New Economy Prize". "Spain is not a compilation of divisions and compartments, but a coherent set" he said and added that "Europe needs Spain" as without Spain it would be a "less rich, less generous, less talented and less clever" continent. Juncker called to overcome the national "ambitions" and think about the "European dream". The President of the European Commission also took the chance to support Rajoy's task as head of the Spanish executive and praise Spain's contribution to the EU. Juncker, together with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the French Republican leader Nicholas Sarkozy, will attend the European People's Party meeting that will be held in Madrid this Wendesday and Thursday.During the meeting, the European leaders expect to passa declaration in defence of the unity of the EU's Member States.
