The candidate of the pro-independence Esquerra Republicana (ERC) party ticket, Oriol Junqueras, warned that Spain’s repression against ERC will be harder than ever if the pro-independence party isn’t the most voted party in the upcoming election. That’s why he encouraged people to vote and called for a massive mobilization in order to win the 21 December election.

In a letter from prison, Junqueras, deposed by the Spanish government after the enforcement of Article 155 of the Spanish constitution and currently in prison in Madrid, said that a victory for ERC will facilitate his release. “If we win, it will be hard for them to keep us in prison,” he said. He also warned that Spain will increase repression against ERC in the upcoming days.

Democracy, justice and freedom

The leader of ERC also asked people “to mobilize in order to stop Article 155”, that suspended Catalonia’s self-rule. He insisted that his party aims to achieve social cohesion in Catalonia. “Our society will never be of privileges,” he stressed.
