The Girona city council has commissioned a study on the potential renewal of the lighting and electrical installation at Devesa, Catalonia’s largest urban park.

Girona’s mayor, Marta Madrenas of Junts per Catalunya, hopes that the next budget will be approved by all parties and include “necessary” renewal work because she believes the park’s shelved Special Plan was “not the one the park needs.”

According to her, the dark areas at night contribute to a “sense of insecurity,” which is why modernization work should take place.

In 2019, the Girona council already budgeted €220,000 for “maintenance work” and last year various projects were carried out, including replanting grass in what was once a football field to create a picnic area.

Madrenas argues that the park, which is over a hundred years old, requires constant but gradual improvement.
