As Catalan Government Representative, Josep Maria Bosch, was about to make to a speech some 15 members of a Fascist group forced themselves into the centre shouting “make no mistake, Catalonia is Spain”. They were carrying Nazi flags as well as flags of the Falange – the fascist party of Franco, which is still legal in today’s Spain. There were around 50 people invited to the institutional ceremony, which was organised to celebrate Catalonia’s National Day. As the group interrupted the event they began to push around of Members of the Spanish Parliament of the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) and the Centre-Right Catalan Nationalist Coalition (CiU). They also broke furniture and tore down the Catalan flags that were on show. On such a high profile day, which highlights the tension between Spain and Catalonia, there was no Spanish police to ensure the protection of the Catalan Government’s offices in Madrid.
