The Catalan government and the city council of Barcelona have reached an agreement over the independence referendum polling stations, thus paving the way for the city’s approximate million eligible voters to participate in the October 1 vote.

“In Barcelona, it will be possible to participate in the October 1 vote without putting the institution and public servants at risk,” Barcelona mayor, Ada Colau, said via her twitter account on Thursday. Immediately after, the Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, retweeted her message and added: “Good news”.

Earlier in the day, a report by the city council’s secretary general warned that allowing the October 1 vote to take place in public buildings would violate the Spanish Constitutional Court rulings and could lead to criminal charges. According to Colau, the agreement will allow citizens to participate in the referendum without going against the secretary general’s report.
