Chinese couple Zheng Yasui and Li Shuo tied the knot at the panoramic viewpoint of Tibidabo amusement park in Barcelona on Tuesday, in front of dozens of strangers who came along as guests.

"We're from China and this is our first time in Barcelona," the bride, Zheng Yasui, told Catalan News the day before their wedding.

The couple loves Spain because of "the stunning architecture and vibrant culture," with Barcelona "one of the most recommended places to visit."

"When I knew that I wanted a destination wedding outside of China, Barcelona was actually the first choice to come to our mind," Yasui said.

The couple already has their marriage certificate from China and is only having the ceremony in the Catalan capital.

Inviting strangers through an app

The couple decided to make an event on Meetup, a social media platform designed to host and organize in-person and virtual activities for people with similar interests.

"Getting married just the two of us in a huge venue seemed too quiet and that is not the wedding we envisioned," Yasui said.

They actually booked a different venue first but decided to change to Tibidabo amusement park to make it easier for others to join.

"Celebrating with people we've never met before might be a very cool thing," Yasui said.

"They come here with their well wishes and kindness, I think it could be an unforgettable and meaningful experience for us," she added.

Around 220 people had confirmed online that they would attend the wedding, but in the end around 60 guests came along.

Rain holds off

On Monday, the day before the wedding, there was a storm code yellow and a full day of rain.

"Our biggest hope for tomorrow is simply that it stops raining because it's an outside event, so the weather is important for us," the bride said.

Because of the weather, the exact turnout was unpredictable, but the couple hoped people would show up and celebrate with them.

Luckily for the couple and their guests the rain stayed away, although it was windy and cloudy.

"We hope everyone who is sharing this special occasion with us really has fun and takes away a special memory from this celebration," Yazui told Catalan News ahead of the special moment.
