Chemical sector makes up 43% share of whole Spanish market

Catalonia is leading in the turnover and production of the chemical and plastics sectors compared to the rest of Spain as a whole.

In terms of revenue, it leads the chemical sector with a 43% share of the whole Spanish market, of a value of 21,134 million euros. Meanwhile, the Catalan plastics industry makes up 24.8% of the Spanish market, with 3,655 million euros.

Concentration of chemical and plastic production

In 2015, the country had 1,238 companies manufacturing rubbers and plastics, the highest number in the whole of Spain, before Valencia, with 956 companies, and Madrid, with 466.

In fact, Tarragona, in the south of Catalonia, and Barcelona are where there is the highest concentration of chemicals and plastics production in the whole of Spain.

Chemical industry leading in exports

In the first two months of 2018, a record start to the year for the exports of Catalan products abroad, the country’s chemical industry came out on top. It was the sector with the most foreign sales, accounting for 3,116.4 million euros, comprising 27.1% of the total of all Catalan exports.
