U2 rock in first of four shows in Barcelona

The Irish band didn’t fail to delight the 17,900 people that attended the band’s first of four shows in Barcelona, which are the only ‘The Innocence + Experience Tour’ dates in Spain. The show combined songs from their latest album, ‘Songs of Innocence’, with hits such as ‘With or Without You’, ‘One’ and ‘Beautiful Day’, amongst others. The audio-visual projections played a very important role during the entire show, with a big screen that melted with the band members at some points. U2, whose last visit to Barcelona was in 2009, have almost sold out all four shows.

After greeting the audience that filled Palau Sant Jordi, U2’s charismatic frontman ‘Bono’ said that the band was so in love in Barcelona that they were going to stay for a whole week. U2’s last visit to Barcelona was six years ago, during the ‘360º’ world tour. This Monday, the Irish band started its four night stand in the Catalan capital, which will be their only dates in Spain during ‘The Innocence + Experience Tour’, and the welcome couldn’t be warmer. With almost all of the shows sold out, the communion between U2 and the audience was evident. Songs from their latest album ‘Songs of Innocence’ were combined with acclaimed hits such as With or Without You’, ‘One’, ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’, ‘Beautiful Day’, ‘Elevation’ and ‘Vertigo’, amongst others. 30 songs in a more than two-hour long concert, complete with impressive audio-visual montage, were performed. Projections could be seen on a big screen that showed images according to the set list and which delighted the audience.

‘Bono’ emerged from inside the arena and moved forward through the crowd until he reached the stage. Once there, the band performed ‘The Miracle of Joey Ramone’. Raised arms and mobile phones acclaimed the band from that moment until the end of the show. “You are fantastic, you are magic” said Bono and invited a spectator to join the band on stage. She recorded images of the audience from her mobile phone, which were directly projected onto the big screen and which amazed the public.

‘The Innocence + Experience Tour’ started in Vancouver in May 2015 and will finish in Dublin in November. After Barcelona, the band will perform in Holland, Germany, the UK and France.
