The number of people who chose to visit Catalan museums or collections in 2017 has risen by 6% compared to the year before, with over 24 million people - 24,052,460 in total, to be exact – choosing to appreciate its heritage.

The nearly half a thousand museums and collections (492) in the country, 96 public and 16 private, have generated economic revenue of around 250 million euros. The museums having received the most foot traffic are those of the Barcelona and Metropolitan Area.

In the last year, 28,080 items were acquired, 125 research projects were put forth, 1,015 temporary exhibitions which attracted 9,425,710 visitors and organized 8,166 cultural activities. The whole Catalan museum system received 13.5 million visits on their websites. The figures, provided by Catalonia’s Department of Culture, were released just in time for events like May 18th International Museum Day, and May 19th Night of Museums.

Night at the Museum

It’s almost here - the chance to see Picasso’s paintings, Catalan art from the mid-twentieth century, and contemporary exhibitions - all in one night, and all for free. Barcelona and, indeed, all of Catalonia, is getting ready for its 14th edition of the ‘Night of the Museums’ aiming to raise public awareness about the importance of these kinds of institutions in society. This year, the event embraces the theme ‘Hyperconnected Museums: New approaches, new publics,’as a way of showing that museums remain a modern fixture.
