Montserrat Caballé will retire in two years at the age of 80

After 50 years of performing, the Catalan opera soprano Montserrat Caballé said she will step down in two years with a farewell tour. The Catalan diva is considered one of the world’s greatest sopranos of the 20th century. Her popularity increased while singing with Freddy Mercury the song “Barcelona”.

Barcelona (ACN).- Montserrat Caballé said that she would retire in two years at the fair age of 80. The soprano singer announced her decision in Zaragoza while presenting the fifth edition of the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition. She told fans that she would say goodbye with a massive farewell tour that would take her back to all the theatres and auditoriums that she frequented during the last 50 years as a singer. ‘I am not fully sure, but would love to do a farewell tour’, she said.


During the press conference today, Caballé spoke about her involvement in the world of opera since 1956 but said that her first debut performance on stage did not come until 1962. Caballé will turn 80 on the 12th April 2013.
