Barcelona (ACN).- Acclaimed orchestra director Josep Pons will be the new musical director at the Liceu Theatre starting in 2012-2013. His 6-season contract establishes an annual progression on the number of shows he will direct, including concerts, operas and ballets. Directing the chamber orchestra will be an “added value to his trajectory and artistic experience” as an international director. Pons will relieve current director Michael Boder.

Josep Pons has led various orchestra projects such as the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure, the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya, the Orquestra Ciudad de Granada and the Orquestra Nacional de España.

The director of the Liceu Theatre, Joan Francesc Marco, has focused perfecting the artistic quality of the Liceu Symphony and Choir and improving the Liceu’s international projection. Improving artistic quality is also a main objective for Pons, who will work together with the Choir’s director, José Luis Basso, to achieve this task.

Josep Pons will direct 6 seasons at the Liceu Theatre. He will participate in the artistic design of the theatre and decide on which guest musical directors to invite.
