Blanes, in southern Costa Brava, plays host to its annual fireworks contest, lighting up the sky with spectacular aerial performances for five nights this week on the Sa Palomera beach.

Running from Tuesday to Saturday this week, the 49th Blanes International Fireworks Competition pits five different fireworks companies against each other to put on the best show. Each different company is given one night to amaze the gathered audience.

In total, 500,000 people are expected to attend the shows. The winner will be awarded €6,000, with second place earning €2,000.

The Hermanos Ferrández company from Murcia opened the festival of fire on Tuesday with a fantastic show lasting twenty minutes. It included new pieces such as the ‘sniper of camuro,’ a type of incandescent rain with sound effects.

The pyrotechnics wanted to surprise the public with a show where they highlighted the aquatic fires on both sides of the beach, hoping to win a fourth consecutive edition in Blanes.
