NATO headquarters in are “very cold, very big, and a bit dark.” This, according to Catalan painter Bea Sarriàs, commissioned by the art committee of the body itself to paint a mural for the intergovernmental military alliance.

To tackle this unique task, Sarriàs chose to work inside the building itself in order to capture its “soul,” which she portrayed largely using shades of grey, with many layers “to capture the light and transparency” of the structure.

Painting on site, said Sarriàs, has been a “very powerful” experience, one that lasted from Monday until Friday. NATO became interested un Sarriàs’ art about a year ago, and the commissioning of this mural coincides with the organization’s 70th anniversary.
