Pro-independence groups have cut some major avenues in Barcelona such as Gran Via or Diagonal this morning in protest against the trial starting today in the Supreme Court.

The major highway crossing Catalonia from north to south and linking with France, the AP-7, has also been cut near Sant Celoni, not far from the Catalan capital. Other roads such as the C-25 in central Catalonia are also affected by the protest.

Some tires have been burned.

Activists say Spanish justice is "unfair" and demand that Catalonia becomes an "independent republic".

Today, 12 former members of the Catalan government and activists are to stand trial for their role in the 2017 independence referendum.
