The European Commission "fully trusts the legal system in Spain". In a press conference in the European Parliament in Strasburg, EC Vice President Jyrki Katainen refused to comment on the ongoing trial against Catalan leaders and did not answer whether or not they would be following the proceedings.

"Our policy on this is well known, this is not a political question. We don't want to comment or make political statements on the developments," Katainen said.

"We fully trust the legal system in Spain", he added, describing as "the most important" thing to make sure that "everything happens according to the Spanish Constitution."

"We give full support to the legal and democratic institutions and constitutional order of Spain," Katainen insisted.
