Catalan President Lluís Companys was arrested in 1934 for declaring independence. Six years later, in 1940, after the Civil War, he was executed by order of Franco. Fast forward to today, Spain's ruling People's Party has said Catalan President Carles Puigdemont could face the same fate. Although they meant he could end up in prison, and not executed by firing squad, the comments have fanned the flames of what was already a tense situation in Catalonia, one day before a potential declaration of independence in Parliament.
