The judge chosen to preside over the Spanish judiciary following an agreement between the two biggest parties, is backing out, after a scandal that hinted at political meddling in his appointment. In a text message leaked to the press on Monday, the PP Senate spokesperson suggested that judge Marchena's appointment would benefit the conservatives, which would be able to "control from behind the scenes" the court chamber that is to try pro-independence leaders.
