Unemployment grew in October for the third month in a row

The number of unemployed in Catalonia rose by 10,341 people in October and has now accumulated three months of increases. This figure represents a 2.02% increase compared to the previous month and the total is now 523,528 unemployed people in Catalonia, of whom only 54.2% were receiving some kind of benefit at the end of last month, according to the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security. All the sectors, except for construction, have experienced a rise in the number of unemployed. The sector which saw the largest increase in the number of unemployed was services, with an increase of 8,891 people, the highest increase in this sector since October 2014. This trend is mainly due to the termination of many seasonal contracts. In the whole of Spain, unemployment increased by 82,327 people and totalled 4,176,369. Unemployment usually rises in October, as it represents the end of many seasonal contracts. This year's increase in the unemployment rate is the lightest registered since 2010.

Barcelona (CNA).- Unemployment in Catalonia grew by 2.02% in October and added 10,341 people to the unemployment list, which now totals 523,528, according to the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security. Although this is the third month in a row with a registered increase in the unemployment rate, it is the lightest increase for a month of October since 2010. Indeed, unemployment usually rises in October, as it coincides with the termination of many seasonal contracts. Proof of this is that most of the newly unemployed people registered last month came from the services sector, which experienced the highest unemployment increase since October 2014. Since 1996, the only drop in the unemployment rate in the month of October was registered in 2005. In the whole of Spain, unemployment increased by 82,327 people and totalled 4,176,369.


There are currently 523,528 unemployed people in Catalonia. The rate of people who lost their job in October rose by 2.02% in comparison to the previous month and all the sectors have seen an increase in their number of unemployed people, except for construction. The sector which experienced the greatest increase in the number of unemployed was services, with an increase of 8,891 people, the highest increase in this sector since October 2014. This trend is mainly due to the termination of many seasonal contracts. The agricultural sector also experienced an increase in unemployment, with 1,705 losing their jobs in this sector. Finally, the industry sector saw a lower increase, with the termination of 177 contracts in October. 

In Spain as a whole, unemployment rose by 82,327 people and reached a total figure of 4,176,369. In comparison to October 2014, the rate of unemployment dropped by 350,435 individuals, which is the highest annual decrease in the Ministry's historical series.

During the month of October, 87.2% of the new contracts signed were seasonal and only 12.7% were permanent. These figures are similar to those registered in October last year.

Regarding the social benefits issued to those unemployed, data from the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security show that only 278,229 unemployed people received some kind of benefit from the State, which represents 54.2% of the total.
