Rental of logistic space in Catalonia shoots up 53% in 2018

Some 45% of properties rented by firms were in the Barcelona area, and include Amazon and Mercadona

Rentals of logistic space by companies in Catalonia shot up in the first nine months of this year. According to the commercial real estate agency, Cushman & Wakefield, rentals of logistic space went up 53%, a total equivalent of 497,000 square meters.

In the third quarter of 2018 alone, some 90,000 square meters were rented out to companies, 15% more than in the same quarter in 2017.

Some 45% of the rental contracts in the first nine months of the year where in Barcelona and the nearby area of Baix Llobregat.

Another 38% where in the Vallès area, to the west of Barcelona, with the remaining 13% in Camp de Tarragona, Bages and Girona.

Some 15 of the rental contracts were for properties over 10,000 square meters, and involved such well-known firms as Amazon.

The agency also highlighted the Mercadona supermarket chain, which rented a space of 10,500 square meters on a plot of 20,000 square meters in Barcelona's Zona Franca industrial estate.

Meanwhile, the DHL international courier firm is to invest in a logistic center of 3,000 square meters in Castellbisbal, in Vallès Occidental, about 40 kilometers outside Barcelona.
