Barcelona Tech City, an association of 800 entrepreneurs, startups and firms in the digital and tech sector, opened Pier03 on Wednesday, with the aim of turning the new business space into an innovation hub in the Catalan capital.

Located in the Porxos d'en Xifré, one of the city's landmark buildings, the new complex will offer a score of companies some 3,500 square meters of space, and there are plans to include a 2,500-square meter garden area.

The new facility resembles the Pier01 project that Barcelona Tech City opened over two years ago in the Palau del Mar building by the beach, which offers working spaces to around a hundred tech companies employing some 1,000 people.

"The different companies and organizations that make up Pier03 guarantee the widespread impact of digital and technological businesses in Barcelona," said the president of Barcelona Tech City, Miguel Vicente.

The new facility is part of the association's strategy to establish different spaces in Barcelona as tech hubs with great potential. Pier01 was the first of these spaces to open and was recognized by Forbes magazine as one of the world's six most innovative tech hubs.
