El Prat Airport registers a record 39.7 million passengers for 2015

39.7 million passengers used Barcelona’s El Prat Airport facilities this 2015, 5.7% more than last year. This figure sets a new record for El Prat, which is the second busiest airport in Spain, only beaten by Madrid Barajas. December was also a historic month, with 2,604,772 passengers whom passed through El Prat. The highest figure was registered in August 2015, were nearly 4.4 million passengers used El Prat Airport’s facilities. The passenger group which grew the most was international travellers, especially the Latin American market, which registered a 21.7% increase in comparison to last year. Regarding the number of operations registered, there were 288.878 take-offs and landings in 2015, which represents 1.8% more than in 2014.

Barcelona (CNA).- The number of passengers whom passed through Barcelona El Prat Airport this 2015 grew by 5.7% in comparison to last year. According to the Spanish Airport Authority (AENA) 39.711.276 passengers used Barcelona El Prat Airport's facilities and there were 288.878 operations registered.December was also a historic month, with 2,604,772 passengers whom passed through El Prat. However, the highest figure was registered in August 2015, were nearly 4.4 million passengers used El Prat Airport’s facilities. The passenger group which grew the most this 2015 was international travellers, especially the Latin American market, which registered a 21.7% increase in comparison to last year. Cargo transportations also grew in 2015, increasing by 19.9% and totalling 117.219 tones. Germany, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and the US are the main countries with which El Prat established cargo connections. 


According to data released by AENA, both national and international passengers grew in 2016. The number of international travellers registered a 6.7% increase while the passengers from within the Spanish State grew by 3.2%.

All the markets registered an increase in their number of passengers, except from some European countries outside the EU, led by the Russian market’s decrease. 

In the International sphere, the market which grew the most in comparison to 2014 was the Latin American (21.7%), followed by Middle East (19.5) and North America (10%). The African market grew by 4% and those passengers from Asia registered a lightest 0.3% increase.  

Regarding the number of operations registered, there were 288.878 take-offs and landings in 2015, which represents 1.8% more than in 2014. In December, there were 19,940 operations registered, 1.8% more than in the same month in 2014.

Cargo transportations grew by nearly 20%

Cargo transportations also grew in 2015, increasing by 19.9% and totalling 117.219 tones. The international cargo routes from outside the EU where those which grew the most in 2015 (25.6%), followed by those from within the EU (3.5%). On the other hand, the national cargo connections decreased by 4.3% in comparison to 2014.

Both exports and imports grew during 2015

Exports grew by 18.4% in comparison to 2014 and totalled more than 59,000 tones. Imports reached nearly 58,000 tones and registered a 10.1% increase. Germany, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and the US are the main countries with which El Prat established cargo connections.
